Frequently Asked Questions About the SmartLink Card Transition

What is the difference between the regular SmartLink Card and the Limited-Use SmartLink Gray Card?

The regular SmartLink Card is a refillable, durable, plastic PATH fare card. It has an embedded computer chip that keeps track of the number of available prepaid trips, as well as the number of trips remaining on an unlimited pass. The SmartLink Card is intended for long-term use and products loaded onto the card do not expire.

SmartLink Gray is a non-refillable paper version of our plastic SmartLink Card. SmartLink Gray does not offer the many electronic features of the regular SmartLink Card, such as balance protection, online account management, or online purchases.

How long will it take to receive my new SmartLink Card in the mail after filling out the application form online?

Your SmartLink Card will be registered and shipped via USPS within five business days of your application approval.

Can I transfer the remaining balance on my SmartLink Gray Card to my new green SmartLink Card?

No, you may not transfer balances from one card to another. The SmartLink Gray Card is valid until all trips are used, or until the expiration date preprinted on the back of the card, whichever comes first.

Can I use the paper voucher from my Transit Benefit Provider to add products to a SmartLink Card?

No, you may not use the paper voucher to add products to the green SmartLink Card. You must use a debit/prepaid transit benefits card to add products to your new SmartLink Card online via the one-time replenishment feature or at a station vending machine, or sign up for a monthly electronic product load with your Commuter Benefit Provider.

In addition to the green SmartLink Card, are there any other options I have for PATH fare?

Yes, in addition to the SmartLink Card, the following fare options are available:

  • Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard
  • PATH 2-Trip MetroCard
  • PATH SingleRide Ticket
